MANILA, Philippines – University of the Philippines (UP) and University of the East (UE) emerged as the top sword-fighting units this season, bagging the overall plums in the mens and womens division of the 73rd UAAP fencing tournament at the Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym.
The Maroons collected 2 golds, 1 silver, and 2 bronzes to lead the medal race against eventual second and third placers Ateneo de Manila University (2 golds, 1 bronze) and University of Santo Tomas (1 gold, 2 silvers, 1 bronze), respectively.
But it was the Lady Warriors who made ripples in the three-day tourney, winning 6 golds and a silver, a far cry from the 2-silver, 3-bronze haul of bridesmaid finisher De La Salle University. Ateneo wound up third with a 2-silver, 1-bronze output.
UP ruled the mens team sabre event while annexing the individual epee category courtesy of Joshua Paunil.
Ateneo struck gold in team foil led by MVP Bryant Cabantac, Jr. who also dominated the individual contest against Rookie of the Year Michael Nicanor of UE.
UST and Far Eastern University (FEU) accounted for the two other golds in the mens side with Sydney Nogadula claiming the individual sabre title for the Tigers and the Tamaraws taking the team epee crown.
The Lady Warriors for their part reigned supreme in team epee, sabre, and foil.
MVP Jaime Nicanor bannered UEs three-gold sweep in individual play, snaring the top mint in foil, while sister Jylyn triumphed in sabre. Christine Almas claimed top honors in epee.
Rounding up the mens standings are FEU (1 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronzes), UE (2 silvers, 4 bronzes) and La Salle (1 bronze).
FEU settled for fourth place in the womens division with 1 silver and 3 bronzes while fifth placer UP had 4 bronzes. UST brought the rear with only a bronze to boot.
